What is the Police Scotland Entrance Exam?

The Police Scotland Standard Entrance Test covers 3 main topics: Literacy, Numeracy and Information Handling. All recruits who pass the initial application will be invited to undertake the test.

How long does the paper take?

The test is now just one exam paper comprised of three core topics – numeracy, literacy and information handling. There are 49 questions to answer, and you get 60 minutes to do so. You must pass all three sections to pass the entrance test.

What is the pass mark?

The pass mark is roughly 62.5%, but you must pass every section. So if you fail in the numeracy section, but pass the other two, you will still fail overall.

Our Free Practice Paper

We have created this practice paper with Police Scotland and the Scottish Government. So it’s the closest practice test you can take. We have created 5 practice tests for you to test your skills.

PSET Language test

The language portion in the PSET will assess you in things such as punctuation, grammar, spelling and comprehension of sentence structure. Writing skills are incredibly crucial when you are an officer, so Police Scotland wants to ensure you are up to scratch before recruiting you.

PSET Numbers test

The next section of the PSET test is a mathematical test. This is the part in which most applicants fail. If you’re not familiar with maths, or you haven’t practised it in a while, you’ll struggle with this section of the exam.

This is why it is essential to practice before the test. It is not permitted to use a calculator in this test. During this section, one of the main things to remember is to include symbols in your answers, as many recruits forgot to.

PSET Information Handling test

The third component of the PSET is the Information Handling assessment. Alongside the numbers, this section of the exam that applicants typically find to be the most difficult, and many people fail in this area.

There are many reasons this test is tough, but the most common is that the test style is one that many people aren’t used to. There will be many charts and tables, and you must answer questions based on the information.
